An avalanche is an abrupt an rapid flow of snow, often mixed with air and water, down a mountainside. Avalanches are among the biggest dangers in the mountains for both life and property.

  • In the "Winter of Terror", 1950-51, hundreds of these killed 200 people & destroyed 1,500 buildings in the Alps
  • Most of these natural disasters occur on slopes of 30-45 degrees
