belanger

Bélanger is a French surname that erives from the Old French given name Berenger, which is of Germanic origin. In the English-speaking parts of North America, Bélanger has been anglicized to Belanger or occasionally to Belonger. Belanger means "warrior" in Old French. Originally, there were two Belanger families, one emigrated to the Appalachian Mountains in Canada, the other died off. Ironically, the family hid in the mountains during the Seven Years War instead of fighting. News got back to France that the family had hidden, and they were denounced by King Louis XV.
