RT @homelifestyletv: On set shooting Bill Porter from Arlington Camera, Alex and Chris - my favorite cowboy actors. Great…
The last person to do what @J_Ross_10 did at Wembley was Bill Porter. Look him up
@laen that could still be easily ignored as a 'bad driver'. I do this all the time and roll back versions.
@macegr @savagecircuits OK I misunderstood the situation then, I thought it was only clearly counterfeit chips.
@macegr @Bill_Porter @savagecircuits I just learned Microsoft has a suggestions site, with voting too. https://t.co/V2ucg3td72
@Bill_Porter if buying from ebay is a crime shut it down, also amazon.
@Bill_Porter @savagecircuits It also bricks FTDI-compatible clones that don't copy the package branding. Copying VID is not a crime.
The FTDI move is clearly pretty polarizing throughout the community.
RT @TAUTIC: @Bill_Porter agreed. @FTDIChip is at least attempting to make things right, I'm impressed.
@Bill_Porter agreed. @FTDIChip is at least attempting to make things right, I'm impressed.
@laen @Bill_Porter and you have the chance to solicit the customers help tracking down the source that people would support you crucifying.
@Addidis @Bill_Porter ..and there’s a very clear indication of what’s wrong.
@laen @Bill_Porter makes people jump thru hoops, but doesn't break anything. You can get by with what the bad vendor sold ya.
@Bill_Porter No, the device can still be used on other operating systems, and with older copies of the driver.
@laen without a replacement driver, doesn't this also brick it?
@Bill_Porter @savagecircuits ..And what if it wasn’t for Windows, but for some random app you had installed?
@Bill_Porter @savagecircuits What if it disabled Windows, but then also overwrote the BIOS?
@Bill_Porter In both cases, the user now has a clear idea of what the issue is and can talk to their manufacturer.
@Bill_Porter Certainly. They also could’ve had the driver not work with it at all, and enumerate as “Counterfeit USB Device”.
@Bill_Porter Agreed.
@laen A good suggestion, but how effective would it be? Couldn't it just be ignored?
@Bill_Porter What if they had dropped the baud rate to 300, and enumerated the device as “Counterfeit USB Serial Device” ?
@Bill_Porter 1.You can't 'steal' IP. 2.Have you seen the die comparison? Which part of the chip was actually infringed? 3.Resold? news to me
@savagecircuits Good as well. I still don't see the difference between this and bricking stolen phones, stolen copies of Windows.
RT @PaulStoffregen: @Bill_Porter @laen They should have caused tremendous inconvenience for end users, but not bricked hardware.
@laen @PaulStoffregen The legal system doesn't seem to work well across borders and creates safe havens for badies. I wish it didn't.
@Bill_Porter @PaulStoffregen But it’s a difficult and unsolved problem. Attacking the end user isn’t smart, though.
@laen @Bill_Porter @PaulStoffregen go after ebay?
@Bill_Porter @PaulStoffregen Use the legal system against manufacturers using illicit components. Pay a bounty for people that turn them in.
@PaulStoffregen @laen I understand it was a hard result for people, but it brought major light to the problem. What would you do 4 the same?
@savagecircuits @Bill_Porter And windows offered me a 50% discount the second it did. I jumped on the op. Still have that windows cd.
@Bill_Porter @laen They should have caused tremendous inconvenience for end users, but not bricked hardware.
@Bill_Porter
@Bill_Porter or is it something even darpa is spending considerable time and effort to protect you from it , seemingly not successfully yet.
@Bill_Porter Are you accusing the military of actively seeking out clones? With the budgets they get ?
@Bill_Porter You work for military. Hows that logic working out for you guys? Is there a gigantic budget to protect you from it?
@Addidis isn't that exactly the same as buying devices from non-authrozied vendors like eBay? You seeked it out.
@Bill_Porter You can call up the carrier and verify an imei . You have to actively seek to break the law.
@Bill_Porter if you commit a crime, knowingly you deserve punishment. If some guy in china commits a crime, then your argument is invalid.
@Bill_Porter and if you want a stolen phone you kinda have to actively seek it out. Say at a flea market. So no , but irrelevant to events
@Bill_Porter If you could buy and activate stolen phones at 711 where you can get legit ones, then yes. But phone companies did theirhomewrk
@Bill_Porter No. But that's not remotely equivalent to the FTDI thing. If the chips had been *stolen*, the driver would work fine. #irony
