Deriving from Pretannia, Dioorus's Greek rendering of the indigenous name Pretani, Britannia was the preferred, early Roman term for the island of Great Britain, and after the failed attempt to invade and occupy Scotland, was the name applied to the Roman province in southern and central Britain (largely corresponding to modern England and Wales).
