Depiction is a istinctive kind of representation. Figurative pictures are the paradigm example. Other examples are contested but may include photography, sculpture, maps, some kinds of diagram, audio recordings and the like. Abstract paintings are usually not included as examples of depiction, since abstract paintings intuitively don't belong to the same kind of representation as figurative paintings do.
