The city of Detroit eveloped from a small French fort in the 18th century to one of the largest American cities in the early 20th century. Based on its auto industry, Detroit's economy peaked following World War II as unemployment decreased and production expanded. Race riots in the late 1960s and administrative mismanagement under Mayor Coleman A. Young (1974-1993) led to white flight and economic decline.
