The song was first a hit for soul singer Robert Knight in 1967 and recorded by several other artists in the years since, notably Carl Carlton, Sandra Cretu, Gloria Estefan, U2 and English pop band Love Affair. Love Affair's single reached number-one in the UK Singles Chart on 31 January 1968.
