Astrobiology (from Greek: ἀστρο, astro, "constellation"; βίος, bios, "life"; an λόγος, logos, "knowledge") is the interdisciplinary study of life in the universe, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology. It is focused primarily on the study of the origin, distribution and evolution of life. Given the influx of new information about planetary systems around other stars, its mandate has expanded beyond the study of exobiology (from Greek: έξω, exo, "outside") per se.
