Florianópolis (also known by its nickname Floripa) is the capital city of Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil. It is compose of one main island, the Island of Santa Catarina, one continental part and the surrounding small islands. It has a population of 406,564 (2006/IBGE). Its metropolitan area has a population of over 821,552 inhabitants. Florianópolis was among Newsweek's 10 Most Dynamic Cities. The New York Times called Florianopolis "The hippest year round beach scene in South America." Additionally VEJA magazine, a popular Brazilian magazine, called Florianopolis the best place to live in Brazil. As a result of this publicity, Florianopolis is growing as a second home destination for many Paulistas, Argentines, North Americans and Europeans.
