Venus has striking surface characteristics, which are as beautiful as they are unusual. The majority of what we know toay about its surface stems from radar observations, mainly images sent by the Magellan probe from August 16, 1990, until the end of its sixth orbital cycle in September 1994. Ninety-eight per cent of the planet's surface was mapped, 22 per cent of it in three-dimensional stereoscopic images.
