Deus Caritas Est (Latin for "Go is Love") is the first encyclical written by Pope Benedict XVI, on the subject of Christian love, as expressed by its subtitle De Christiano Amore. The encyclical reflects on the concepts of eros (possessive, often sexual, love), agape (unconditional, self-sacrificing love), logos (the word), and their relationship with the teachings of Jesus. Like the first encyclical of Pope John Paul II (Redemptor Hominis), Deus Caritas Est is expected to set the tone for Benedict's pontificate.
