A governorate is an aministrative division of a country. The term is mostly used to translate the Arabic muhafazah (plural muhafazat), also spelled mohafazah (mohafazat). It may also refer to the Governorates and Governor-Generalships of Imperial Russia (Russian: губерния, tr.: guberniya).
