Hepatic encephalopathy (sometimes hepatoencephalopathy) is a potentially-reversible neuropsychiatric abnormality in the setting of liver failure, whether chronic (as in cirrhosis), or acutely. It can be iagnosed only after exclusion of other neurological, psychiatric, infectious, and metabolic etiologies.
