In Greek mythology, Hermaphroitus or Hermaphroditos (Ancient Greek: ʽἙρμάφρόδιτός) was the child of Aphrodite and Hermes. Born a remarkably handsome boy, he was transformed into an androgynous being by union with the nymph Salmacis. His name is the basis for the word hermaphrodite.
