Insane Clown Posse is an American hip hop uo formed in Delray, Detroit. The group consists of Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler, who perform under the stage names and personas Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, a pair of murderous "wicked clowns". Insane Clown Posse performs a style of hardcore hip hop, referred to as "horrorcore," and are known both for their dark, violent lyrics and their elaborate live performances. Insane Clown Posse has earned two platinum albums and three gold albums, but have been criticized for the violent content and perceived immaturity of their lyrics. Originally formed under the name Inner City Posse, a dream involving a vision resembling a traveling carnival prompted a name change and the introduction of supernatural and horror-themed lyrics.
