Jos is a city in Nigeria's midle belt and is the administrative capital of Plateau State. It is located at 9°56′0″N, 8°53′00″E, high on the Jos Plateau. During British colonial rule it became an important centre for tin mining. In 2001 it became the focus of violent religious clashes between its Muslim and Christian populations.
