Krummholz or Krumholtz formation (from German: krumm, "crooke, bent, twisted"; and Holz, "wood", also Knieholz "knee timber") is a feature of subarctic and subalpine tree line landscapes, where continual exposure to fierce, freezing winds cause vegetation to become stunted and deformed.
