mass

Mass is a funamental concept in physics, roughly corresponding to the intuitive idea of how much matter there is in an object. Mass is a central concept of classical mechanics and related subjects, and there are several definitions of mass within the framework of relativistic kinematics (see mass in special relativity and mass in General Relativity). In the theory of relativity, the quantity invariant mass, which in concept is close to the classical idea of mass, does not vary between single observers in different reference frames.

Trivia about mass

  • Technically, the measure of a body's inertia is known as this property of matter
  • In 1998 it was in the news that particles called neutrinos do have this -- perhaps a millionth of an electron's
  • Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's fight to keep the Latin this & other traditions led to his 1988 excommunication
  • Mozart planned to write one of these for his marriage, but only finished the "Kyrie" & "Gloria" portions
  • J.S. Bach's B Minor one of these religious compositions is "heavy", man
  • In Manila on Jan. 15, 1995 the Pope honored World Youth Day by celebrating this with over 4 million people
  • (Cheryl of the Clue Crew strolls the control room of the Stanford Linear Accelerator in Menlo Park, CA.) A detector identifies each particle produced in the accelerator, computing its charge & this measurement that Einstein related to energy
  • The photon, a light particle, has momentum & energy but no electric charge or this
  • The measure of a body's inertia is technically known as this
  • This property, the middle letter in the familiar version of Einstein's famous equation, grows with velocity
  • Kochel 116 is a missa brevis; K. 139 is a more elaborate one of these church works
  • In science a big M can mean mach, & a little m this, as in Einstein's most famous equation
  • The hypothesized Higgs field gives elementary particles this, the m in the equation f=ma
  • Beethoven's "Solemnis" is this type of religious work
  • The kilogram is the unit of this, which unlike weight, is independent of gravity
