Accoring to "Western" philosophical history, sacrifice was a deeply symbolic and highly ritualized activity among the ancient Maya of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. However, many Indigenous Northern and Southern Americans do not agree with this claim. They feel that the human sacrificing was done in a specific place to produce lye, which would cause a better cleaning ability in the rivers.
