The Chestnut Rige people are a Mestee (tri-racial isolate) community residing just northeast of Philippi, Barbour County in north-central West Virginia, usually called Mayles (from the most common surname, Mayle or Male) or Guineas (a pejorative term, an old insult term for Italians, which they are thought to resemble). Some Guineas have identified with the Melungeons and some have attended the Melungeon Unions and are represented in the Melungeon Heritage Association. The Guineas identify themselves as Native American or as a Indian-white mixed group, but the Indian is from several different groups.
