The Memorial Plaque was issue after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British and Empire (now Commonwealth) service personnel who lost their lives as a result of the war. It was of Bronze, and hence popularly known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", due to the similarity to the penny coin.
