Coorinates: 16.56° N 33.44° E Meroë (Meroitic: Medewi or Bedewi; Arabic: مرواه Meruwah) is the name of an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile about 6 km north-east of the Kabushiya station near Shendi, Sudan, approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum. The area often is referred to as Nubia. Sometimes these peoples are associated with having ancient origins linked to the Neolithic Capsian culture and Berber tribes as with so many populations of north Africa.
