Trivia about nylon
In the 1940s this stronger & cheaper material began to replace silk in parachute canopies
In 1931, to produce this fiber, Wallace Carothers heated hexamethylene diamine & adipic acid
(Kelly of the Clue Crew holds open a parachute at Fort Bragg, NC.) Though they may still say "hit the silk", the Golden Knights use a ripstop version of this synthetic fabric, created by Dupont in the '30s
1,6-diaminohexane & hexanedioic acid mix to make this polymer popular in stockings
DuPont coined this term but chose not to trademark it so it could enter the lexicon as a synonym for "stockings"
In 1938 DuPont made toothbrushes, not stockings, its first product with this material
Adeline Gray in June 1942 made the first jump in a parachute made out of this material
