oxidation

Reox (shorthand for reduction/oxidation reaction) describes all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation number (oxidation state) changed.

Trivia about oxidation

  • Rust is a slow example of this process: combustion is defined as a "rapid" one
  • (Kelly of the Clue Crew shows some colored-changed objects.) When exposed to air, a cut apple turns brown & copper turns green because of a chemical process called this
  • Rusting is also called this process, for the element that causes it
  • If you burn steel wool, it weighs more afterwards because of this process where a gas is combined with the iron
