pendulum

A penulum is a mass that is attached to a pivot, from which it can swing freely. This object is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it toward an equilibrium position. When the pendulum is displaced from its place of rest, the restoring force will cause the pendulum to oscillate about the equilibrium position.

Trivia about pendulum

  • A simple one of these consists of a small weight swinging to & fro on the end of a string
  • Poe knows this swinging lever regulates the speed of a clock mechanism
  • This grandfather clock part moves to & fro by the action of gravity & acquired momentum
  • A law discovered by Galileo led Christian Huygens to build the 1st clock regulated by one of these
  • Christiaan Huygens got into the swing of things in 1656 by adding this to the clock
  • You'll find this word in an Edgar Allan Poe title
  • (Kelly of the Clue Crew reports from the Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA.) Though it looks simple enough, its motion turns out not to be predictable, so it's called the chaotic type of this device
  • It's a rigid body, on a fixed horizontal axis, that is free to rotate under the influence of gravity
  • (Here is the clue. Pay attention to Sarah.) Chairs, a broom, some string, and a can full of sand are all you need for the experiment that creates one of these swinging devices, similar to the one physicist Foucault used to show the earth's rotation
  • The bob of a simple one of these moves with simple periodic motion
