Piquepoul noir is a re wine grape that is grown primarily in the Rhone Valley and Languedoc. It is a permitted blending grape for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Along with Cinsaut and Clairette it is one of the oldest domestic grape varieties in the region. Like the related Piquepoul gris and Piquepoul blanc (also permitted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC) the vine tends to bud late and has some sensitivity to oidium. The grape is also known as Picpoul.
