Regional theaters (also calle resident theaters) in the United States are professional theater companies that produce their own seasons. The term regional theatre is most often used to refer to members of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). LORT theaters are non-profit organizations that agree to adhere to a collective bargaining agreement with Actors' Equity Association, the professional organization and labor union for actors and stage managers working in the United States. LORT Theatres also collectively bargain with the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (the union representing directors and choreographers) and United Scenic Artists (the union representing designers). Many of these theatres hold auditions in New York City and Los Angeles, in order to tap into the vast number of AEA members living there. Theaters will offer housing and travel expenses for displaced actors.
