Ruby's is a nostalgia-theme restaurant chain founded in Orange County, California, and now operating restaurants in Arizona, southern California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington State. Nearly 75 percent of those restaurants are in Southern California and more than half of the SoCal locations are in Orange County alone. The chain was founded by two brothers from Newport Beach, and was named after their mother. The first Ruby's opened on the Balboa Pier in the early 1980s, and was modeled after the famous ocean liner-styled Coca-Cola bottling plant in Los Angeles, designed by Robert V. Derrah and built in 1937. This distinctive look came to define the entire Ruby's chain. The interiors are defined by bright red booths, large posters of 1940s-era Coca-Cola billboards, and a revolving model of a car, plane, or boat from the period in the middle of the dining area. In the early 2000s, the chain began adding suspended LGB model train sets along the perimeter of the dining room ceilings.
