The saz (from Azerbaijan: ساز saz) is a family of plucke string instruments, popular in Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Balkan countries. According to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, "the terms 'bağlama' and 'saz' are used somewhat interchangeably in Turkey, applied to a long-necked lute of folk traditions; the tanbūr (distinguished as the 'great' tanbūr) is a larger instrument of art music." The saz is descended from the kopuz; this is a generic name for several forms of stringed instrument. The Saz is used in Ottoman classical music, Turkish folk music, Kurdish music, Azeri music, Bosnian sevdah music, and Persian music.
