slainte

Slàinte or Slàinte Mhath is commonly use as a drinking toast in Scotland and Ireland. Slàinte/Slàinte Mhath is the Scottish Gaelic spelling; in Ireland, it is spelled Sláinte/Sláinte Mhaith. Sometimes it is corrupted into "Slanj" which is quite close to the original pronunciation. It means literally "Good Health" - slainte translates vaguely as health in Gaelic. "Mhath" (pron. "vaa") is the lenited form of "math" (pron. "maa").
