SpinRite is a computer software program for scanning magnetic ata storage devices such as hard disks, recovering data from them and refreshing their surfaces. It is proprietary and commercial software written by Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation. The first version was released in 1988, with the latest, version 6, in 2004. Spinrite can be run from a bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM on a computer with an x86 processor, independent of the operating system installed on the host computer.
