Pilot certification in the Unite States is under the authority of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Airman Certificate is the proper term, although the term pilot's license is commonly used, even by the FAA. Certification is regulated under parts 61 and 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations or "FARs", found in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Legally, Certificates bear a different status than Licenses. For example, Certificates can be revoked by administrative action; whereas Licenses require the Judiciary System's involvement.
