tendons

A tenon (or sinew) is a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that usually connects muscle to bone and is capable of withstanding tension. Tendons are similar to ligaments except that ligaments join one bone to another. Tendons and muscles work together and can only exert a pulling force.

Trivia about tendons

  • Muscles may connect directly onto bones or connect to them by these
  • The highly developed carnassial teeth shear these cords that connect muscle to bone
  • In the hand, these are in self-lubricating sheaths to protect them from friction against the bones
