It is based primarily on biblical accounts of the arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, events commonly known as "The Passion". The film was rated R by the MPAA for "sequences of graphic violence." The film’s dialogue is in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew, with subtitles. It was filmed in Italy, exactly in Matera and Craco (Basilicata) and Cinecittà Studios, Rome.
