Thyateira (also Thyatira) is the ancient name of the moern Turkish city of Akhisar ("white castle"). The Turkish equivalent ot Thyateira is Tepe Mezarligi. It lies in the far west of Turkey, south of Istanbul and almost due east of Athens. Although it is about 50 miles from the Mediterranean, it would have been closer in ancient times, as the sea has retreated some.
