totem poles

Totem poles are monumental sculptures carve from great trees, usually cedar, but mostly Western Redcedar, by a number of Indigenous cultures along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. The word "totem" is derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem, "his totem, his kinship group" (root -oode).
