In military terminology, esertion is the abandonment of one's "duty" or post without permission from one's Government or one's superior. One's ultimate "duty" or "responsibility," however, under International Law, is not necessarily always to one's "Government" nor to one's "superior," as we see in the fourth of the Nuremberg Principles, which states:
