The Waffen-SS (German for "Arme SS", literally "Weapons SS") was the combat arm of the Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron") or SS. In contrast to the Heer (often mistakingly called the Wehrmacht, but the Wehrmacht was the entire armed force, comprised of the Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe and, unofficially, Waffen SS), Germany's regular army, the Waffen-SS was a combat unit composed of volunteer troops with particularly strong personal commitments to Nazi ideology and selected on racial basis, so that people such as Jews or Poles were not allowed within the organisation. As stated by Himmler, the primary goal of SS formations was to fight Jewish people, people considered subhuman by the racist Nazi ideology (e.g., Poles, Jews, Roma people) and communists.
