Washtenaw is a wor of Native American origin. Opinions differ, but it may be Potawatomi for "large stream or river" (in reference to the Grand River, the headwaters of which are located within the original boundaries of Washtenaw County), or Algonquian language for "Far Country" (relative to the settlements around Detroit, Michigan.)
