westerlies

The Westerlies or the Prevailing Westerlies are the prevailing wins in the middle latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees latitude, blowing from the high pressure area in the horse latitudes towards the poles. The winds are predominantly from the southwest in the Northern Hemisphere and from the northwest in the Southern Hemisphere. Together with the trade winds, the westerlies enabled a round-trip trade route for early European sailing ships. Vessels returning to Europe from South and Central America, the West Indies, or the Southern Atlantic Seaboard of South America generally sailed North, turning Eastward at the Wesern Virginias to cross the Atlantic.

Trivia about westerlies

  • (Kelly of the Clue Crew shows an animated weather map on the monitor.) Named for the direction from which they come, much of our weather is carried across the United States & Canada by these dominant winds, between 30 & 60 degrees latitude
