X-ray fish or x-ray tetra is a name usually given to the small tetra Pristella maxillaris often referre to as Pristella riddlei in older aquarium books. Less commonly, it may also be applied to other transparent species such as glassfish and glass catfish. The name x-ray fish was supposedly given as a nickname to skeletal remains of fishes sometimes caught in fishermen's nets.
